Fun fact, they use mercury for gold mining. It’s basically like a gold magnet. Mercury fuses with gold dust that’d be otherwise invisible to the naked eye or too difficult to separate from dirt. They mix mercury with dirt that is expected to have gold in it but the mercury doesn’t fuse with dirt. So you’re left with dirt and gold amalgam. The amalgam is distilled, which leaves behind pure gold and distilled mercury is collected to be reused on the other side.

This is how goldmines used to extract gold from rocks and refine it. Once it DISOLVES the gold into an amalgamation and that is heavy. they use a cloth to remove the excee mercury and the heavy amalgam is heated vaporizing the mercury and leaving relatively pure gold in its place.

the gold is still there it either has to be refined through a heating process or through using nitric acid. the heating process evaporates the Mercury which is extremely dangerous because mercury in its vapor form is very detrimental to the nervous system. doing it with nitric acid the chemical process is another way but nitric acid itself is very very dangerous. either way the gold can easily be extracted back from the Mercury if using the proper cautions.
