Today is the Feast Day of Saint Augustine of Hippo in the Catholic Church. I’m not going to go into a theological dissertation but in his book “Confessions” Augustine (who loved theater) ponders on how odd it is that we find so much enjoyment in the suffering of Fictional Characters. He explains in much greater detail and far more eloquently than I can, how hypocritical it is to feel bad for a suffering character when in all actuality you wouldn’t be interested in the play at all unless it was tragic. I can’t help but think about this every time that I think about the story of Jason Todd. The fact that people voted to see this child superhero get tortured and killed is crazy. The funny thing is that Saint Augustine is right. Thousands of people wouldn’t care about Jason if he didn’t become Redhood. It’s just interesting
