@mr_azah: After traveling for days and driving deep into Botswana’s Central Kalahari Game Reserve, we finally reached the San community early in the morning. The village appeared empty. Everyone was still asleep, and the winter cold was intense. There was no visible electricity—not even a generator. I saw simple huts, dogs running through the village and more than 60 goats inside one enclosure. Nearby was a smaller pen filled with young goats. Roosters crowed from near and far. Then our interpreter, who originally came from this community, called out several names. An elderly man and woman emerged from one of the huts. After greeting us, they immediately built a fire so we could sit around it and keep warm. But as I observed them, I became confused. After traveling this far into the Kalahari, I had expected to meet San people still living mainly as traditional hunters and gatherers—similar to those portrayed in The Gods Must Be Crazy. Instead, the couple was fully dressed and heavier than I expected. The elderly man looked tired and walked with a limp, using a walking stick. The reality before me did not match the image I had carried from history, documentaries and movies. I began asking myself: What had happened to their traditional way of life? Was I looking at a traditional San community—or at the consequences of a way of life that had been interrupted? I turned to Siya for answers. In the next episode, he explains what happened here—and why a San grandfather had told us: “When we could no longer hunt, it destroyed our way of life.” What do you think people lose when they can no longer practice the way of life that sustained them for thousands of years? Tell me in the comments. Follow Inside Africans, share this episode and return for Siya’s explanation. If you would like to support Siya and his wife as they complete and equip their guest property, contact me. I will connect you directly with their family.
