I think the 3 silver coins are a religous (Catholic) reference to Judas and the 30 pieces of silver, he betrayed Jesus for. Trial attorneys use 'Judas and the coins' term often during closing arguments to highlight a betrayal of trust, greed, or someone who "sold out" their integrity for financial gain or personal benefit. It's a metaphor and in this case, its a direct shot against the credibility of the prosecution. In this case, Red used it as a "call-back" to the "mortal sin" comment- which he requested a mistrial and was denied. He's 'speaking' directly to those specific jury members who were possibly influenced by the 'mortal sin comment'. She is Judas and 'took the silver coins' just like Judas did to betray Jesus. He's trying to resonate with them and play into the bias that was introduced by the 'mortal sin comment'. Even though the judge told the jury to "strike" those religious comments from their brain- it cannot be used in their decision-making process, nor towards their verdict. However, it was spoken aloud and the jury heard it. Using religion during testimony, whether against or for a defendant, is federally prohibited. Once its brought up, it influences the jury & can trigger unconscious emotional reactions. or conscious bias opinions. It allows the jury to possibly use a defendents religion/beliefs rather than just the evidence; risks a verdict based on religious discrimination rather than the law. We've all heard about The Seperation of Church and State... allowing religion or religious beliefs into legal procedings and practices violates the very fundamental boundary between government and religious institutions. I think Red placed the bait. She took it. And he knows the jury members that picked up on his 'silver coins' troupe, are the same ones that were influenced by the 'mortal sin' comment.
