I set a toll on every ship passing through the Sound. The money poured in. So did the hatred of every trader who had to pay it. In the end they turned on me one after another. Sweden rose first, then Denmark, and Norway in their wake, until every crown had slipped from my grip and the king of the north had no kingdom left to his name. So I withdrew to Gotland, and from there the story turns stranger. Holed up in a castle in the middle of the Baltic, I lived as something between a deposed monarch and a pirate, preying on the very trade routes I had once fought to command.
