![hegel’s theory (part 1) | follow for more hegel. hegel writes this in the preface, before the argument of the book has even begun. it is his opening shot. the full sentence is sharper than the part you have. the commonest way we deceive ourselves about understanding, he says, is by assuming something is familiar and accepting it on that account. such knowing never gets anywhere, and it does not know why. the target is not ignorance. ignorance knows it does not understand. the target is the more comfortable condition of taking something for granted. the person who has lived with an idea or a thing or a person for long enough that it no longer presents itself as something requiring examination. it is just there. known. settled. filed away. and because it no longer asks anything of you, you assume you have understood it. hegel is saying this is a form of blindness dressed as knowledge. familiarity produces the feeling of understanding without the substance. you have seen something many times. you have used the word many times. you can place it in a sentence without effort. and so the question of what it actually is stops being asked. the analysis stops. the inquiry closes. his examples in the surrounding passage are telling: god, nature, understanding, sensibility. the biggest words. the ones people use most confidently and examine least. the more familiar the word, the more settled the assumption that it is understood, and the more thoroughly the understanding has in fact ceased. the practical implication is uncomfortable. the things closest to you, most taken for granted, most woven into the texture of your daily life, are the things you are most likely to have stopped seeing. the most examined things in your life are probably the ones you only recently encountered. what in your life are you most certain you understand? save this and sit with it. georg wilhelm friedrich hegel was born in stuttgart in 1770 and died in berlin in 1831. the phenomenology of spirit, published in 1807, was his first major work and is one of the most difficult and important texts in the history of western philosophy. it traces the development of consciousness through successive stages of experience, each stage collapsing under its own contradictions until consciousness arrives at what hegel calls absolute knowing. the preface, from which this quote comes, was written last, after the rest of the book was completed. it is one of the most dense and challenging prefaces in philosophical literature and contains several of hegel’s most quoted lines. the miller translation (oxford university press, 1977) is the standard academic edition in english.
