9 Months Old: 84.7kg & 84.7 KG at Almost 9 Months Old! The numbers are in, and he is hitting 84.7kg at almost 9 months old! While that is a massive milestone, it is just one piece of the puzzle for us. As always, a quick reminder to our followers: we do not raise sheep for fattening, and we are not into meat production. Our absolute focus is genetic improvement and selective breeding. For perspective, that is a weight you can find in many well-fed Balami and Balami-cross sheep at 2 years or more. And here is what makes this result particularly interesting: I feed my Ladoum only twice a day. Therefore, average daily gain (ADG) is not our primary selection criterion. What interests us at JajiBasit Farm more is following the animal’s long-term growth curve and development, from around 4 months to 36 months, and even beyond. We record parameters such as height at the withers, body length, chest circumference (heart girth), and body weight in order to study the animal’s morphological development and growth potential over time. So we are not simply trying to produce a sheep that gains weight quickly. We are trying to improve and progressively fix, generation after generation, the characteristics that we believe define the true large-framed West African breed.
