If you pay attention beauty standards are often influenced by economics and wealth For example historically in Europe sunlight was relatively scarce and less intense so having tanned or darker skin could suggest that you were wealthy enough to go on holidays and spend time in the sun In contrast in Asia and the East where sunlight was abundant having fair skin could indicate that you did not have to work outdoors and therefore belonged to a wealthier social class It’s still basically the same today only the way it is expressed has changed.
