Will Dr Mona @pedsdoctalk watch to the end and ANSWER MY QUESTION !? Because at this rate it seems her followers in the comment section of her own reel understand the nuance around bedsharing and SIDS research better than she does. Has she just not read past the abstracts of the studies she’s linking, or is she choosing to omit all the information that doesn’t support her argument? To conflate rebreathing and suffocation with what I’m discussing in my original reel feels like a bad-faith arguement. Surely Dr Mona knows that carbon dioxide toxicity is dose dependent? Yes, in large amounts or without simultaneous access to oxygen, carbon dioxide can be lethal. But in small amounts, research shows that carbon dioxide exposure stimulates respiration! In any case, there was no misinformation in my reel, and all the studies I’ve linked below show that. Parents bedshare. That’s a fact. There are risks to bedsharing. Also a fact. Many of these risks can be mitigated. Another fact. There are also aspects of bedsharing that add a layer of PROTECTION against SIDS. This is ALSO A FACT. Withholding information on the protective elements of bedsharing prevent parents from being able to make an informed decision on the best sleep setup for their family. It undermines their ability to think critically about their options and assumes the nuance around safe bedsharing is too complicated for them to understand. This, in turn, leads to MORE bedsharing deaths, not less, because people don’t have access to all the information and the depth of understanding that would help make it safer. Bedsharing becomes unplanned and unprepared, two factors we know get in the way of safe sleep setups. Truly invested in curbing the number of bedsharing-related deaths happening in Western countries? Then talk about bedsharing more often, including the factors that contribute to its safety….like, for example, a parent’s breath on their baby’s cheek 😉 #bedsharing #cosleeping #SIDS #safesleep #babysleep
