There’s a strange transition that happens in life that nobody really prepares you for. When you’re young, your parents build their entire lives around you. They know where you are. What time you’re coming home. Whether you’ve eaten. What you’re worried about. Who your friends are. Then you grow up. You get married. Build a career. Have children. Start carrying your own responsibilities. And without ever intending to... The people who once made you the centre of their world slowly become people you speak to when you “get a chance.” That thought really bothers me. Because while our lives are getting busier, our parents are getting older. And the uncomfortable reality is that there will eventually be a last phone call. A last meal together. A last time you walk into their house and hear their voice. And you probably won’t know it’s the last time when it happens. There are people right now who would give everything they own just to see their mum’s name appear on their phone again. Or sit with their dad for another ten minutes. We still have the thing they’re desperately missing... And sometimes we’re too busy to answer the phone. If Allah has blessed you with parents who are still alive, don’t wait until you lose them to understand what you had. Call them. Visit them. Sit with them without looking at your phone. Ask them questions you’ve never asked before. Listen to the stories you’ve already heard ten times. You’ll have plenty of years to be busy. You won’t have your parents for all of them. May Allah give our parents long, healthy lives and give us the ability to honour them properly while they’re still here. Aameen
