@explaining.quran: One of the beautiful ways to make du‘a is to call upon Allah by the names and attributes He has revealed. The Prophet ﷺ taught a man to say: “O Allah, I ask You by virtue of the fact that all praise belongs to You. There is no god but You, the Bestower of favours (Al-Mannān), Originator of the heavens and the earth, O Possessor of Majesty and Honour (Dhul-Jalāli wal-Ikrām), O Ever-Living, O Sustainer.” The Prophet ﷺ then said that this man had called upon Allah by His Greatest Name. (Sunan Abi Dawud 1495, Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi 3544) Another powerful example is the supplication: “O Lord of the heavens and the earth, and Lord of the Mighty Throne…” (Rabb as-samāwāti wal-arḍi wa Rabbil-‘Arshil-‘Azīm). These descriptions remind us of who we are calling upon: the Lord of everything, the Creator, the Sustainer, and the Possessor of all power. When making du‘a, call upon Allah with His beautiful names and attributes, and ask Him with humility, certainty, and sincerity.
