wtf thats not metagaming, your character could have already had combat with them and in characte remind them they have a spell, metagaming is encountering a rakshasa for the first time and tellijg your party that spells dont work on them cos you as a player know that even tho your character never heard of a rakshasa, just watch what OA did at the first few episodes of vox machina...

It depends on the meta gaming. Helping with spells, sure, but for example, we (frequently) split the party, one part went into a what seemed to be abandoned hut and started searching it (quite casually) and then the other part notices people heading to that hut. And then suddenly somebody in that hut gets a severe sense of urgency to want to get out of that hut, while that person shouldn't even know people are approaching... That sort of metagaming is just spoiling the game in my opinion...

What she described isn’t meta gaming. Reminding a player of something their character would know that the player forgot isn’t meta gaming, that’s helping them to accurately play the character. Meta gaming is when you know something a character wouldn’t know, like what is happening to another character on a different room, and acting on that information. I don’t think she knows what meta gaming is and Brennan is too polite to correct her 😂

I had time where someone in the party solved a riddle, but weren't allowed to say the solution, unless succed in a check cause their character had low intelligence.
I really hate GMs that really believe this is a good thing

Reminding a player especially new about what their character can do or would know in universe, isn't meta gaming.

That's not meta gaming, that is reminding someone what their character already knows. The character should know their spells

gives the least metagaming example of metagaming...

i don't know much about dnd but is her example really a case of metagaming though? because that would mean the character is at disadvantage because of player flaw, just because the player can't remember their spells doesn't mean the character wouldn't, right? especially if you're playing a high int character

Players forget about so much but there are things that their character wouldn't so why not remind them

That’s not really meta gaming, if your friend is forgetful that’s probably not something their character would forget. To me meta gaming is like using your knowledge of engineering or science that a character shouldn’t know

I used a form of meta gaming the other day. I asked our barbarian who was being stubborn if he, as a player was ok witj my character bullying him coercing him into something. because I did 't want the player to do anything wkth their character they didn't want to do. but I didn't give a flying F about the opinion of their character.
meta gaming is also using out of character information, to influence your in game choices ..
meta gaming used for good.

Metagaming has its place and it takes a socially healthy person to know when to use it and when to not use it. But it's definitely too vilified especially when you're helping newer players.

Yea I think it’s generally fun when players have learned things like how many hit points does a mimic generally have and skeletons are vulnerable to bludgeoning damage - they get to feel smart and I can always compensate as a DM to make the fight balanced anyway

One of my games is in the midst of a false Hydra encounter at the minute, and the fact all the players are aware of what it is and have figured it out means we can actually play into the way the monster is supposed to work with our roleplay. The meta knowledge is helping us have more fun

Couldn't it just becomes that the player character jokingly reminds their friend the other player character that they forgot their spells again? 😊

i agree. It’s fun to have the right spell or ability for a situation. so if you don’t remember, it would be good to have someone remember, even if they shouldn’t.
