@y00k07: YES: The mayor of Tempe, Arizona just shut off all of its Flock license plate reader cameras — and this time, they're not turning them back on. The city announced it's ending its contract with Flock Safety entirely and won't be looking for a replacement. Mayor Corey Woods said the cameras "helped our police officers do their jobs," but that the risk of misuse was simply too great to keep them running. "The risk of misuse is too great,” he said. “We have to be able to provide public safety in a way that maintains the trust of our community. For Tempe, that means taking these cameras down.” He's not wrong to worry. In nearby Chandler, a police officer just resigned after admitting he misused the same Flock system. In Apache Junction, an officer used it to track down his own wife. Multiple Arizona cities are hitting the same wall: give police a tool that can track anyone's car, anywhere, anytime, and eventually someone uses it to stalk an ex or spy on family instead of solving a crime. Most cities respond to that with a statement promising an "audit." Tempe responded by turning the cameras off and walking away from the contract completely. No new vendor. No workaround. Just off.
