Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis patented copper-riveted work pants in 1873, helping turn durable denim into a global staple. But generations earlier, enslaved Africans and African Americans brought indigo-growing and dyeing knowledge to America, where plantation owners converted their expertise and forced labor into profit. Enslaved workers were also dressed in coarse fabrics marketed as “Negro cloth.” While those textiles were not identical to denim, they belonged to the same broader history of cotton, labor and durable workwear.
