Asked by: Pastor, Why Are So Many People No Longer Going to Church? Pastor: Observant brothers and sisters may have already noticed that fewer people are going to church than before, and many active church members have not been seen for a long time. So what is causing them to become distant from the church? In general, there are about four main reasons. 1. The church has become like a marketplace. This may not sound pleasant, but it is a reality. Some church leaders cooperate with businesspeople and focus on doing business, and believers follow them. Instead of hearing pure teaching and growing in their love for the Lord, they become more involved in worldly things. Such churches become no different from secular organizations, and many believers cannot accept this, so they choose to leave. 2. The church no longer puts God first. Some pastors serve the Lord in name, but treat the church like their own private property. They make all the decisions, often lecture brothers and sisters, refuse to accept suggestions from believers, and demand loyalty to their church. They even say that leaving the church they lead and going somewhere else is betraying God. This kind of control makes people feel as if they are living in a prison and prevents them from experiencing the joy of the Holy Spirit. 3. There are too many religious rituals, and they become more important than the truth. The purpose of the church is to provide a place where believers can grow spiritually. However, some churches spend too much time and energy on religious ceremonies, festivals, competitions, and other activities, while neglecting a deeper understanding of the truth. Believers may participate in many activities but fail to receive real spiritual nourishment. Over time, they lose interest in the church. 4. Pastors do not practice God’s Word. Many pastors are not focused on preaching God’s Word. Instead, they like to talk about where they have gone to preach, what kind of food they were served, what they ate, and what they enjoyed. They do not care about the weaknesses of believers and only focus on enjoying the benefits of their position. This kind of behavior not only makes people question the reality of their faith, but also makes it difficult for people to continue respecting them. Even though these problems exist in churches, we should not become distant from God because of them. The Bible says, “Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another…” — Hebrews 10:25 We can choose to join a church that teaches the truth faithfully and keep our eyes on God’s truth instead of people’s behavior. As long as we sincerely seek God, Jesus will lead us to find a spiritual home where we can grow and become stronger in faith.
