scary in theory, but how would this even work outside of deltas own distro channels? delta doesn’t know who’s searching on google flights or Expedia, but it has to give a price anyway. if that price isn’t stable until the end of the booking process, the consumer can just book at one of their competitors

Cybernetics has nothing to do with computers. It’s the study of feedback loops and recursion in systems. The name comes from the Greek word for steering a ship, because steering ships is a feedback loop where previous headings impact subsequent headings.

Delta is able to do this because they have regional monopolies on flights to certain other regions. You already have no or little choice on which airline you fly depending on where you live and where you’re going. Only at that point are they able to squeeze out as much consumer surplus as they can. Otherwise competition would just offer those flights at lower prices. So the monopolies are the problem, the computer system is just a result of that problem.

A primarily private economy that uses prices to convey information is pretty much the only way, so far discovered, to run an economy that actually works. It is inefficient in observable ways, yet still less inefficient than the rest. The Soviet economy was famously one of the most inefficient economies of all time.

it's worth remembering that Adam Smith, the capitalist economics godfather, invented the term 'free market' to describe active government regulation to prevent monopoly and ensure anyone can freely enter an industry to compete. That model, and the 'invisible hand' price signal, has probably never existed anywhere, least of which in the aviation industry which should just be nationalised and run for the public benefit.

what actually stopped the computerization of the Soviet economy was that it was intentionally sabotaged by the bureaucrat class because I'm more computerized economy needed less bureaucrats much many of them would lose their jobs and thus lose the power and prestige.

I think the algorithmic pricing issue contributes so much to the cost of living crisis. it's why you can make over $100k, which was always seen as comfortable, and still end up paycheck to paycheck. it's the ultimate perversion of "from each according to his ability..." where the needs part is replaced with the needs of corporations to maximize profits.

This is not exactly reality today and probably won’t be in the future for the simple reason that each airline has to price its routes to compete with other airlines. There is only so much algorithmic tweaking Delta can do on its own to target me on my hunt for a good LAX - NYC fare when United is right there offering its own fares.
