Why I didn't charge a deposit and it's the biggest mistake I made 2 times. I was afraid I was gonna give people a reason to not let me tattoo them. I was building my portfolio, one guy desperately wants this one design he showed me a year ago. I go and find it online because I remembered it, first red 🚩 he doesn't respond when I ask him where exactly he wants it. the design is a photo so I gotta redo that entire thing, bec I don't know where I do it in a way where I could theoretically put it even on his lower back. big. he loves it. when it comes to making his appointment. he don't answer, he don't pick calls. but he got the design as his profile picture now. Free work. second guy, I show him the tattoos I did, he is super interested, wants to do a Japanese oni traditional piece on his neck wrapping into a joker half sleeve from the shoulder down to his elbow. I finish the neck design, hes not sure anymore if he wants to do it, I got the joker thing done 80%, he decides he like the Japanese traditional neck I did now and wants the arm rhe same. so I make a joker/oni mash up Japanese inspired half sleeve, and it's badass. but at this point I'm burned out on the whole thing, I told him I'll do both pieces for 200 each, but with all the work I've put into it, that isn't nearly enough anymore. and I'm uncomfortable telling him look, im gonna need 300+400 for the arm at least, cause I don't want to seem like an asshole. if I was a professional I would have said, look you changed the design, I need another deposit, if 50 is too much give me 20 or whatever you got on you. these things take time and I don't work for free. pfft, now I gotta take deposits. probably everyone got stories like that

So if walk in with a custom design that I did myself as an artist that I just want 1 to 1 onto my body would that waive the brainstorming fee?
