Nah that’s a misconception. If they’re toxic you’re allowed to keep your distance

Islam doesn’t tell you to side with oppression, if your family is genuinely causing you harm or suffering, you’re allowed to distance. I think that’s the important distinction, you don’t have to play nice or keep in contact just to ‘keep ties’. Why would Allah want you to suffer

from what I read it's completely ok to distance yourself from family members if they're negatively effecting your wellbeing, and especially if they're physically harmful. You're only not allowed to cut off family members for very insignificant things or for no reason.

Many of you don't know the seriousness of cutting off family ties in Islam and it shows. Many of prophets and messengers went through many difficulties due to harmful family members and were never told to cut ties. Study the deen. If they're harmful do your part to maintain ties and keep your safety. There is no severing ties.

if they’re bad people who want to hurt you or if they’re just mean, you’re not obligated to give them affection or keep in touch, just accept they are your family, and at some point (if any) they were dear to you, and the move on.

Depends on the situation. Islam never teaches us to uphold ties that are way toxic and harmfull for you.

The comments saying “you can NEVER cut off a family member” are taking the command to maintain family ties way too absolutely. Yes, silat ar-raḥim is extremely important, and you cannot cut someone off because of one disagreement, anger, spite, or simply because you dislike them. But serious abuse is not the same thing. Allah says about Ibrahim عليه السلام: “When it became clear to him that he was an enemy to Allah, he disassociated himself from him.” (Qur’an 9:114). And Sahih Muslim 2561 is specifically under the chapter “The Prohibition of Forsaking Someone for More Than Three Days for No Legitimate Reason.” So even the prohibition itself recognizes the concept of a legitimate reason. Nobody has the right to tell an abused person, “Just endure it, they’re family.” If someone is genuinely harming you physically, sexually, emotionally, or otherwise seriously damaging your wellbeing, protecting yourself and creating distance is not the same as cutting someone off out of spite. Every situation is individual. The people commenting do not know your circumstances, what happened behind closed doors, how severe the abuse is, or what would actually be safest for you. Allah knows your situation and Allah knows your heart. So please don't blindly follow a random TikTok comment telling you what you must do with an abusive family member. If you are able to, speak to a trustworthy local imam or qualified scholar who can hear the actual circumstances and advise you according to Islam. Do what you can to protect yourself from harm while staying within what Allah has commanded. Sometimes the test is not “How long can I tolerate this?” Sometimes the test may be having the strength to remove yourself from the harm. And Allah knows best.
