But then again, if everyone stood still, you’d have a perfectly functioning human conveyor belt where nobody moves their legs. And somehow escalators are also terrifying when you actually think about the mechanics. There’s a bunch of massive metal steps constantly disappearing underneath the floor and reappearing at the other end, yet we all casually put our shoes near the gaps and trust the machine with our entire existence. Imagine explaining that to someone from 500 years ago: “Yeah, we have a staircase that eats itself every few seconds, but don’t worry, it’s completely safe.” And lifts are even stranger because we’ve somehow accepted that standing inside a tiny metal room while it rapidly moves vertically through a building is normal.
