Your app asks the server "anything new?" 700 times an hour. Four of those asks had an answer. Short polling is a client, a server, and a timer. Almost every reply is "nothing yet". When news finally does arrive it just sits there, because nobody has asked yet, and you find out on the next tick. Poll faster and you pay more for the same nothing. Long polling changes one thing. The request goes out and the server simply does not reply. It holds the connection open until there is actually something to say. One request per event instead of one per tick. A websocket goes further. It starts as an ordinary HTTP request with two headers, Upgrade and Connection, plus a random key the server has to echo back. The server answers 101 Switching Protocols. Same connection, it just stops speaking HTTP. After that it is one open channel and a few bytes per frame, both directions, no asking. But not everything needs a socket. A handful of clients polling costs nothing, plain HTTP gets you caching and proxies and retries for free, and serverless has nothing to hold a socket open. Polling is stateless and always late. Sockets are instant and you now own state and reconnects. Choose by how often the thing actually changes. Ask on a timer and you are always late.
