🚨 Handling the gaslighter PART 5👇 ▶️ When someone denies something that we know has happened and makes out we are confused, misinterpreting things or are not remembering it right (when we know we are) it can be very disorienting and upsetting. ▶️ It’s one thing to remember something differently to someone else but quite another when they lie and then make out you are the problem. ▶️ For many of us it can lead us to doubt our own experience and become quite emotional because we feel so invalidated. ▶️ This is exactly what gaslighting does. It makes us doubt ourselves and what’s happening around us. If we don’t recognise this is happening we can react emotionally and start trying to argue. There is no point arguing with someone like this it will just send us down a black hole. ▶️ Practice recognising when someone is gaslighting you. (Denying what you know is happening and then turning it onto you by saying you’re misinterpreting things/ confused) Practice responding calmly: “I remember what happened clearly which is why I’m trying to get to the bottom of why incorrect information was shared” To avoid taking responsibility they will likely say you’re over reacting/ too sensitive etc. again don’t argue. Disengage by saying something like: “Given we have a very different recollection of things there seems to be little point in continuing to discuss this. Let’s leave it there” Remove yourself as soon as you can from unhealthy dynamics like this. 📌 Please remember the advice offered in this video is generalised. You know your situation better than anyone else so trust your instincts, if this doesn’t fit your situation ignore it. 💬 Put a 🙌 in the comments if this was helpful 👀 #worktips #gaslighting #bully #leadershipdevelopment #corporatelife #emotionalintelligence #manager #assertivecommunication #difficultconversations #communication #difficultpeople
