@ryanmitchell.co: Why do the swings hit hardest at night? Because that's the only hour when nobody needs you. There's a man who runs the whole day on rails. Meetings, kids, money, decisions. People call him steady. Steady people get asked for help. They rarely get asked how they are. At eleven at night he sits in the car in his own driveway for twenty minutes, because the car is the one room where nothing is asked of him. One minute he's telling himself: I've got this, it'll be fine. The next minute he's drained and counting how much more he can carry. Then back up again. Up, down, up, down. Is something wrong with him? No. This is what living in survival mode looks like from the inside. The swings aren't a mood problem. They're the bill for being strong too long. No rest, no backup, no single hour that belongs to him. A system running past its limit doesn't hold a steady line. It swings. That's physics, not character. Why doesn't he just rest, then? Because rest, in his accounting, is a debt. Every hour on the couch feels borrowed from the family, from the job, from the mortgage. So he keeps paying with the only currency he has left: himself. A man can run on that currency for years. The interest compounds where nobody sees it. And the exhausting part isn't the low. It's the pretending during the high. Motivating yourself is also work. He spends energy convincing himself he still has energy. That loop drains a man faster than the actual load ever did. ... If you've seen this man in your own mirror: nothing in you is broken. Broken things don't swing. They stop. The swinging means the system is still fighting for balance. It doesn't need repair. It needs the rest it was never given, the kind you don't have to earn first.
