@hankgreen1: Longer video getting into the very very weird details of how the immune system figures out what cells are healthy and what cells are bad is up on youtube.
My son took part in the last clinical trial. Keytruda (pembrolizumab) and the mRNA vaccine created from his cancer cells. His was stage 3c melanoma, removed a golf ball sized chunk from his leg down to the muscle but found cancer cells in the "guardian" lymph nodes near the site. As I understand it, it's a significant decrease in chance of recurrence over Keytruda alone.

Is this CAR-T? It’s not experimental- my niece got it for leukemia 2 years ago. I never realized it was actually a vaccine….

Wait but how do people know if they have a genetic predisposition to cancer? I know they can get tested for that, but I imagine a lot of people won’t and thus there are a lot of people who have a genetic predisposition but don’t know it (I could be wrong). How do we make sure that everyone who has a genetic predisposition knows they have it?

Cancer is essentially a group of diseases where the result is uninhibited cell growth. There are many avenues to end up at the result that is a given type of cancer. It's a large part of what makes it such a tough nut to crack as far as diseases go. Its also one reason why we can cure and treat some, but not others. Being able to train the immune system against specific cancer cells via a vaccine is probably the closest thing to a cancer silver bullet we've come to so far. It would/will be a game changer (Dropout pun not intended)

Neat Thanks :
I’m curious. If it prevents it from coming back by training your immune system to fight it. Could the same therapy maybe be able to just defeat cancers that is still there? Instead of also needing to remove it fully?

I think Richard Scolyer and Gorgina Long co directors of the Melanoma Instatute of Australia both deserve a shout out. Richard Scolyer passed in June 2026.

My dog got an oral melanoma cancer vaccine in 2014/2015 after surgery and radiation. I love thinking about how those studies and dogs might have helped human cancer research ❤️
