@abdul.writes.wafa: Rohingya History The Rohingya are a Muslim ethnic community historically associated with Rakhine State (Arakan) in western Myanmar, near the border with Bangladesh. Before colonial rule: Arakan had long-standing connections with both Buddhist and Muslim communities. Muslim communities lived in the region for centuries through migration, trade, and political connections across the Bay of Bengal. British period (1824–1948): After the British took control of Arakan, migration from areas of British India increased. This changed the region's population and later became a source of political and ethnic tension. After Myanmar's independence in 1948: Relations between Rohingya and the newly established Burmese state became increasingly difficult. Questions about citizenship, identity, and political rights became major issues. 1978: A major military operation forced hundreds of thousands of Rohingya to flee to Bangladesh. Many later returned. 1991–92: Another large-scale military campaign caused more than 250,000 Rohingya to flee to Bangladesh. 2017: On 25 August 2017, attacks by military operation. More than 700,000 Rohingya fled to Bangladesh, amid widespread reports of killings, sexual violence, village burnings, and other abuses. Today: Hundreds of thousands of Rohingya remain in Rakhine State, while roughly one million live as refugees in Bangladesh, especially in Cox's Bazar. Large Rohingya communities also live in Malaysia, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan India and Thailand other countries.
