@historywithadh: On August 27, 1943, Staff Sergeant Joseph Funicello boarded the B-17 Amatol for his second mission. The target for the raid was a secret weapon construction site near Watten, France. Unlike his first mission, the Luftwaffe pressed their attacks on the formation. The gunners of the 351st Bomb Group claimed five aircraft with two more probable. The fighters did exact their own damage. The enemy fighters exacted their own revenge, shooting down the B-17 Fast Woman. Of the crew of the Fast Woman, three were killed, five were taken prisoner, and two managed to evade capture. After going around on the bomb run twice, the Group achieved poor to fair results. The Amatol returned safely but the loss of the Fast Woman brought the reality of the Air War home to Joseph. #History #ww2history #militaryhistory #aviation #b17
