Melanie Hall was a 25-year-old psychology graduate and hospital clerical officer whose disappearance and murder have become one of the United Kingdom’s longest-running unsolved cases. Originally from Bradford on Avon, Wiltshire, she worked at the Royal United Hospital in Bath and was described by family and friends as bright, independent and well-liked. On the night of 8 June 1996, Melanie went out with friends to Cadillacs nightclub (now Walcot House) in Bath. After an argument with her boyfriend, he left the club and Melanie stayed behind. The last confirmed sighting of her was at around 1.10 a.m. on 9 June, sitting on a stool near the dancefloor. When she did not return home and failed to turn up for work, her parents reported her missing on 11 June. Police launched an extensive investigation at the time but found no trace of her. For more than a decade the case remained cold, until on 5 October 2009 a workman clearing vegetation beside a motorway discovered human remains in bin bags alongside the northbound slip road of the M5 at junction 14 near Thornbury in Gloucestershire. Forensic testing confirmed the remains belonged to Melanie, and evidence showed she had suffered significant injuries consistent with foul play; her body had been tightly wrapped in plastic bags and bound with lengths of blue rope. Despite ongoing efforts over the years — including dozens of arrests, CCTV enquiries, public appeals and advances in forensic techniques such as partial DNA profiling from the rope found with her remains — no one has ever been charged with Melanie’s murder and the case has remained officially open. Police have repeatedly said they believe someone knows what happened to her that night and urged the public to come forward. As the 30th anniversary of her disappearance approaches in 2026, investigators renewed and amplified their efforts. Avon and Somerset Police have begun a fresh, comprehensive review of the evidence, digitising large volumes of material so that modern techniques — including artificial intelligence analysis — can be applied. Detectives have reportedly narrowed a large pool of persons of interest down to less than 20, and are re-examining alibis and witness accounts. A key part of the renewed appeal includes the release of a new colour e-fit image of a man seen with a woman fitting Melanie’s description in the early hours of 9 June 1996. He is described as a white male in his mid- to late-20s at the time, about 5 ft 10 in tall with dark brown hair and eyes, and was reportedly wearing a brown silk shirt and possibly a gold hooped earring and a flashy watch. Police are asking anyone who recognises this man, or who has any information about the night Melanie vanished or the movements of her remains afterwards, to contact them urgently. Despite these renewed investigative pushes and technological tools now being applied, the murder of Melanie Hall remains unsolved. Her family continue to appeal for information and hope that someday new evidence or a tip from someone with knowledge of what happened will finally bring justice after nearly three decades. #truecrime #truecrimetok #horror #murder #ukcrime
