Today marks the anniversary of the conquest of the Empire of Trebizond, the last remaining territory of the Roman Empire, by Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror. Following the Latin invasion of Constantinople in 1204, the Roman, or common name Byzantine, dynasty split into three. One part went to Greece and established the Despotate of Epirus, the Laskaris family went to Nicaea/ İznik (later Palaiologos), and the Komnenos family went to Trebizond/ Trabzon. Some historians say they had already planned to establish a state in Trabzon before the Latin invasion. The reason for choosing Trabzon was the support they would receive from Queen Tamar of Georgia, a relative of the Komnenos family. In fact, they controlled a large part of the Black Sea region outside of Trabzon, but over time they lost their lands to the Seljuks. Finally, the 7th Ottoman Sultan brought the state to an end. Mehmed the Conqueror besieged the city with a large army and navy, both by land and sea, but the city surrendered without a fight. Therefore, there was no looting, and the family was exiled to Edirne (not execute). However, when the relationship between the last emperor, David, and Uzun Hasan, an enemy of Mehmed the Conqueror, was revealed, it not only ended his life and that of his sons, but also marked the end of the Komnenos Dynasty. Thus, Mehmed the Conqueror both destroyed another empire and left no other dynasty on earth that could rival the Roman throne. A great scholar from Trabzon had said to Mehmed II,
