@buddhism066: The Buddha allowed monastics to eat meat under the threefold purity rule if they did not see, hear, or suspect the animal was killed for them. For laypeople it is a choice guided by compassion. For those on the Bodhisattva path meat eating is not allowed. The Lankavatara Sutra says the eating of meat is not permitted to a Bodhisattva. The Mahaparinirvana Sutra says it suffocates the seed of sympathy. So for Bodhisattvas vegetarianism is the ideal. Compassion is the highest teaching.
