Tabi are a style of shoes originated in Japan made for mobility and balance. Margiela made them popular in high fashion he didn’t invent the shoes. With that being said I love my tabis and they’re extremely comfy!!

Margiela popularized them in the 80s, they originated from Japan, the origin is from the tabi sock in the 15th century Japan. They are comfortable enough that construction workers in Japan wear them.

Since you’re into fashion, you will probably get it in a light bulb moment. Margiela shoes (not any other cheap brand for me!) are great because they take something completely familiar—a ballet flat, Mary Jane, boot—and make it just a little weird. The Tabi is obviously the best example. Yes, it looks like a hoof. That’s sort of the point. It takes a shoe that could be pretty or ladylike and messes with it just enough to make it interesting. And unlike a lot of designer shoes, you recognize Margiela because of the design, not because there’s a giant logo or buckle announcing what you bought. You’re not necessarily supposed to think they’re beautiful in the conventional sense. They’re beautiful because they’re a little wrong or even ugly. They keep certain of my outfits from looking too polished and safe. I hate that they’re becoming so popular though…
