4C was coined on nappturality hair forum. It was also called Cnapp - however that didn’t take off. I believe 3c was added by the naturally curly hair forum before this. I never agreed with the hair typing system it doesn’t do much.

And Andre Walker didn’t like tightly coiled hair. So he tended to ignore it unique needs. I had the book when it came out. 😂 I have been saying this in comments section for years. ITS MADE UP!!! Folks treat hair type like they are gang affiliations🙄🙄

The typing system was a godsend for us 4c girlies when looser textures DOMINATED everything labeled curly and natural. We began earnestly policing tho because no one cared(s) about our concerns questions and frankly assistance with how to style our hair. Instead people got mad we were demanding accuracy in representation. That turned into the typing system helping us see ourselves represented in styles that look like us. And while the typing system is not perfect our texturing leanings in the black community seeped in the natural hair community. Now a fine textured loose wave woman might have something in common it’s a 4c fine textured woman but it won’t be texture and how our hair turns out or how to manage the way our hair turns. This might be slightly different for men who tend to have more spaces to wear their hair in so stand cornrows or shave it off comfortably without pressure or simple desire to manage our hair in a certain way. Even 4b girlies hair can be drastically different. There is difference in texture density depth? And Width of our strands as 4c girlies but that’s a difference within our texture. When people mention porosity etc that has zero to do with why most of us rely on the system

in anthropology there is a hair typing system, but there's over 70 hair types.
