The Airbus Main Flight Display (PFD) features a
The Airbus Main Flight Display (PFD) features a "high ground" display (also known as terrain or brown/green topographic maps) on the Aircraft Direction Indicator (ADI). This provides pilots with a better understanding of the surrounding environment by visually representing the elevated terrain relative to the aircraft's current altitude. During the final phase of the approach, as the aircraft nears the ground, the lower portion of the display (representing the terrain) gradually rises on the PFD. This "high ground" effect provides immediate and intuitive visual feedback on how close the aircraft is to the ground, which is extremely useful in low-visibility conditions. This high ground display is based on radio altimeter data, which measures the aircraft's altitude directly above the ground (or the terrain/runway below). It is available during any type of approach (e.g., ILS, RNAV, visual approach, etc.).
