Your kneecap does the same thing. When your knee bends, the cap glides through its groove. When the rotation between your thigh and shin is off, the cap drags off-center. That's the crunch. The fix is rotation, not massage. In half kneeling, foot out front, grab the shin and turn it in. Stay heavy on the heel, kneecap over the second toe.
