why isnt there a way to use normal letters and a computer to translate that into Morse code and then send it wouldn't that be cheaper than say having an operator

I've never understood how you could tell the difference between an S and three E's. Or any other combination. How do you know when the letter is done?

We describe Morse code as “dots“ and “dashes“ not primarily because of the short and long signals. Originally the signals were not beeps of different length. They were clicks from a relay-like sounder. The long and short beeps cane with radio. (Visual Morse code could also have long and short elements.) When Morse code was created, there was huge demand for it but no experienced operators. That is, no one could understand the letters by ear. So the original telegraph stations had a strip of paper drawn by a clockwork motor under a pen attached to the arm of the sounder. The characters were drawn on the strip of paper as a series of dots and dashes. That way an untrained operator could transcribe the message by merely looking at the long and short marks. “SOS” was not the original distress signal for maritime Morse code. It was “CQD.”
