I was hiring a web designer recently and what I received shocked me. Portfolio after portfolio filled with complicated projects nobody asked for. Someone built a logistics and trucking platform, vibe coded from start to finish. Another built a financial tracking app. Impressive on the surface. So I asked one of them a simple question. Is it working? No. It is not. Here is what I was actually looking for. Someone who has built a website for a construction company. A portfolio site. A website for a hardware shop. An e-commerce store for a laptop shop in Nairobi. Out of everyone, maybe one or two had that. Everyone else was chasing complexity while ignoring the work that actually pays. Let me explain how I think about my own skills. I do not sit down and invent platforms. I drive along Kiambu Road and look at the car yards. Most of them are barely online. Shady websites or none at all. So I build one with Lovable and take them a solution. My clients are not startups. They are micro, small, and medium enterprises. Ordinary Kenyans. A finance consultant who needs appointment booking. Someone selling courses who needs an admin dashboard. A hardware owner who wants to run ads and send that traffic to a landing page. That is what gets paid. And here is the maths. If I build a business a website that helps them turn over a million shillings a month, are you telling me they will not comfortably pay 170,000 for it? My only question is always the same. Will this website make you money or support your marketing? If not, we do not build it. Stop chasing beautiful. Chase functional. Build a church website. An NGO site. A furniture store demo you can walk into Murara Home Furniture and pitch. The money is not in impressive projects. It is in solved problems. — Elvis W.
