In the Soviet Union, tuning a car was nothing like it is today. There were no specialized tuning shops, no catalogs full of body kits, and no easy way to order the parts you wanted. If you wanted your car to look different, you had to make almost everything yourself. In this story, I tell how we decided to turn a right-hand-drive Toyota Mark II into a real one-of-a-kind project. We searched for scarce materials, found a battered Japanese tuning magazine, studied pictures of Japanese cars, and then started building our own body kit right in an ordinary Soviet garage. We worked with sheet metal, fiberglass, gauze, epoxy resin, paint and whatever else we could find. We shaped the bumpers by hand, made custom fender extensions, welded a spoiler, sanded everything down and finally painted the car a deep bright blue with aggressive red stripes. The result was certainly unusual — maybe even a little ridiculous — but it was completely ours. And for us, that was the most important thing. This is how we tuned cars in the Soviet Union in 1989, with almost no proper parts, but with plenty of imagination, patience and garage ingenuity. #USSR #sovietunion #History #story
