An NIH study that followed more than 33,000 women found that those using chemical straighteners frequently were two and a half times more likely to develop uterine cancer — and L'Oréal, maker of Dark & Lovely, now faces nearly 12,000 lawsuits over it. Here's why: a relaxer works by force. The active is sodium hydroxide — lye, the same caustic base in drain and oven cleaner — and it straightens hair by breaking apart the protein bonds that hold your curl, strong enough to burn and scar the scalp. Riding in that same formula are phthalates and formaldehyde, and through burned, broken skin they get a direct way in. The problem is those two chemicals: phthalates scramble your hormones, and formaldehyde is the embalming preservative the FDA is now moving to ban from hair straighteners — the same kind of chemical regulators in the US and Europe have already restricted in cosmetics.
