@basil.jambason.otieno: THE RISE OF LUHYA BENGA LEGEND SUKUMA BIN ONGARO: Born in 1946 in Ebukambuli Village, Mulwanda area of Kakamega County, Wilson Omutere Ongaro, famously known as Sukuma Bin Ongaro, rose from deep hardship to become one of the greatest voices in Western Kenya’s Benga music. After losing his father at a young age, he was raised by his mother, Jessica Kubondo, alongside seven siblings. Life was difficult, and due to poverty, he never stepped into a classroom. Instead, he spent his childhood helping his mother brew busaa and herding cattle. Even without formal education, he slowly learned Kiswahili and some English through everyday interaction with friends and villagers. Inspired by the sweet sounds of musicians like David Amunga and Isaiah Mwinamo playing on the family radio, young Ongaro developed a burning passion for music. At only 13 years old, he built his first homemade guitar using a sieve and scrap materials. Though the sound was rough, villagers gathered around to listen to a humble beginning of a musical giant. In 1962, with determination in his heart, Ongaro travelled to Nairobi after his mother sold a cow to raise his bus fare. Life in the city was tough at first, even forcing him to spend nights at the railway station. Fate later connected him to his idol David Amunga, leading to the recording of his first songs: “Ongaro Alikufa” and “Leunidah Ang’iyo.” As his music gained popularity on radio stations, his talent attracted major producers. From Sang’alo Studios to Chandarana, Kundi, and later the legendary Oluoch Kanindo, his value kept rising, proving his growing influence in Kenya’s music industry. He adopted the stage name “Sukuma,” meaning “push” in Kiswahili, symbolizing the energetic way he played solo guitar. His timeless hits such as: -Ndatsia Mombasa -Wacha Waseme -Kazi ya Msumeno Imenishinda -Kila Siku Suku -Oluchendo Lwe Mwalo -Amajini Keshirandu -Jirani Kuno -Malaba Border -Nerea Utaolewa Lini? - PART TWO: UNAMKUMBUKA HUYU MZEE WA KAZI 𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐚 𝐒𝐜𝐫𝐚𝐩-𝐆𝐮𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐫 𝐊𝐢𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐚 𝐁𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐚 𝐋𝐞𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐝: 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐨𝐟 SUKUMA BIN 𝐎NGARO What happens when pure passion meets relentless hustle? You get 𝑾𝒊𝒍𝒔𝒐𝒏 𝑶𝒎𝒖𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒆 𝑶𝒏𝒈𝒂𝒓𝒐, famously known to generations of music lovers as Sukuma Bin Ongaro. Born in 1946 in Ebukambuli Village, Kakamega County, Wilson’s journey was anything but easy. After losing his father at a young age, he was raised alongside seven siblings by his mother, Jessica Kubondo. Poverty kept him out of the classroom, spending his childhood herding cattle and helping brew busaa. 𝑩𝒖𝒕 𝒎𝒖𝒔𝒊𝒄 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒄𝒂𝒍𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒈. Inspired by radio icons like 𝑫𝒂𝒗𝒊𝒅 𝑨𝒎𝒖𝒏𝒈𝒂 and 𝑰𝒔𝒂𝒊𝒂𝒉 𝑴𝒘𝒊𝒏𝒂𝒎𝒐, a 13-year-old Ongaro did the unthinkable: he built his very first guitar using scrap metal and an old sieve. It was rough, it was makeshift, but when he played, the whole village gathered to listen. In 1962, his mother sold a family cow to buy him a bus ticket to Nairobi. The city tested him hard he even spent nights sleeping at the Nairobi Railway Station until fate brought him face-to-face with his mentor, David Amunga. That meeting sparked his first recorded tracks: “𝑶𝒏𝒈𝒂𝒓𝒐 𝑨𝒍𝒊𝒌𝒖𝒇𝒂” and “𝑳𝒆𝒖𝒏𝒊𝒅𝒂𝒉 𝑨𝒏𝒈’𝒊𝒚𝒐.” He took the stage name “Sukuma” (Swahili for push) because of the energetic, driving rhythm of his solo guitar playing. And push he did! From Chandarana to the legendary Oluoch Kanindo, producers fought to record him as he pumped out timeless Kenyan classics like: 🎵 𝑵𝒅𝒂𝒕𝒔𝒊𝒂 𝑴𝒐𝒎𝒃𝒂𝒔𝒂 🎵 𝑲𝒂𝒛𝒊 𝒚𝒂 𝑴𝒔𝒖𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒐 𝑰𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒊𝒔𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒅𝒂 🎵 𝑾𝒂𝒄𝒉𝒂 𝑾𝒂𝒔𝒆𝒎𝒆 🎵 𝑴𝒂𝒍𝒂𝒃𝒂 𝑩𝒐𝒓𝒅𝒆𝒓 🎵 𝑵𝒆𝒓𝒆𝒂 𝑼𝒕𝒂𝒐𝒍𝒆𝒘𝒂 𝑳𝒊𝒏𝒊? Sukuma Bin Ongaro proved that you don't need a formal education or fancy equipment to change the world, just a vision, raw talent and the courage to push forward.
