Want to use Claude Code without being locked into a separate Anthropic subscription? 👀💻 This setup shows you how to connect Claude Code to OpenRouter so your coding sessions can run through an OpenRouter API key instead. It’s a useful option if you want more flexibility around model access, routing and how you manage your AI usage. 🚀 The setup itself is surprisingly straightforward. First, install the official Claude Code CLI on your machine and confirm everything is working with claude --version. Then create an OpenRouter account, generate a new API key and store that key somewhere secure. 🔐 Treat your API key exactly like a password. Never publish it, screenshot it, paste it into public repos or commit it to GitHub. Once you have your key, Claude Code can be pointed towards OpenRouter using the correct environment variables. The important pieces are your OpenRouter base URL, your OpenRouter API key as the authentication token, and making sure the normal Anthropic API key variable doesn’t conflict with the connection. ⚙️ If you previously authenticated Claude Code directly through Anthropic, you may also need to log out of that session before switching. After that, launch Claude Code from your terminal and test the connection. ✅ You can also use tools such as claude doctor to inspect your installation if something doesn’t look right. Why would you do this? 🤔 OpenRouter can give you a central place to access models, manage API usage and control spending, while Claude Code still gives you the agentic coding workflow developers love: exploring repositories, understanding codebases, planning changes, editing files, running commands and helping troubleshoot problems. 🧠⚡ But there’s one important clarification about the “FREE” part. 🛑 OpenRouter does offer free models and free-tier access, but that does not mean genuinely unlimited usage forever. Free models can have request limits, rate limits, availability restrictions and smaller context windows. If your free allowance runs out, you may need to wait, choose another eligible model or add credits. So think of this as a way to experiment with Claude Code through OpenRouter’s available free options rather than a guaranteed unlimited loophole. 💡 For the most reliable Claude Code compatibility, Anthropic models routed through OpenRouter are generally the safest option because Claude Code is built around Anthropic’s API behaviour.
