👇Things that are normal in German grocery stores but not the U.S… 🛒 360° shopping carts I haven’t seen a single cart in Germany that doesn’t swivel all the way around. And almost all of them are locked and require a coin to unlock, which keeps them organized. In the U.S., most carts don’t swivel at all… and half the time you end up with that one wobbly wheel that makes the whole trip a struggle. 😂 🧻 Cheaper essentials It still amazes me how affordable everyday items are here, from toilet paper to baby food. In the U.S., these basics keep getting more expensive, so seeing them at such reasonable prices in Germany genuinely blew my mind. 🧴 Roll-on or spray deodorant Back home, solid stick deodorant is the standard and the shelves are full of options. Here, it’s mostly roll-ons and sprays, and it’s honestly tough to find a stick deodorant at all, usually just one or two choices. Makes me wonder why? 🍺 Beer cheaper than water This is something I never saw in the States. In Germany, there are so many different types of beer, flavors, local brands, seasonal ones, even premium labels, and depending on the store, some of them still cost less than bottled water. 🍫 Tiny chocolate chip packets Chocolate chips usually come in really small packets here, and I genuinely don’t know how people bake large batches with them. In the U.S., you grab a big bag and you’re set. Do people just not use chocolate chips the same way here? 🥫 Condiments in tubes Mustard, mayo, and sauces in tubes are super common in Germany. They do have bottles and jars, but tubes are everywhere, which you almost never see in the U.S. where the packaging is almost always bottles. ••••••••••• Hi, I’m Brittany, a U.S. American making Germany my home. I share my everyday life in North Germany, including travel, food, countryside renovations, cultural differences, and what it’s really like building a life abroad.
