There is something truly special about earning the attention of a lion. As we drove towards three members of one of our prides, they didn’t rush over. Instead, they calmly climbed onto the roof of their shelter, giving them the perfect vantage point to safely observe us from a distance. From there, every movement, sound, and scent could be assessed before deciding what to do next. This is exactly how lions are meant to behave. In the wild, lions often seek elevated areas such as termite mounds, rocky outcrops, or raised ground to scan their surroundings. A higher position allows them to spot potential prey, keep an eye on neighbouring prides, and identify anything unusual in their territory while conserving energy. Curiosity is one of their greatest survival tools, but it is balanced with caution. At Felidae Centre, we encourage these natural behaviours by allowing our animals the space to make their own choices. Watching a lion confidently observe the world from a safe distance is far more rewarding than expecting them to approach people. As a volunteer or guest on one of our Adventure Tours, you’ll experience moments like these, quiet, authentic encounters where you can witness the intelligence, confidence, and natural instincts of Africa’s most iconic predators while learning why respecting their behaviour is so important.
