Servant of God, James VII/II, Ora Pro Nobis. King James II and VII of England, Scotland and Ireland was the last Catholic King of Britain. He was deposed in 1688, when he was betrayed by his own two daughters and his nephew/son in law. He went into exile in France, and after his attempts to restore his throne failed, he turned increasingly to God. James believed that God had deprived him of his throne due to his sins in life, particulary his adultery in his youth and time as King. He grew close to the Ciseterian monks of La Trappe, who encouraged him to take up more prayer, mass and devotions to prepare his soul to meet God. He increasingly lost interest in politics and restoration attempts, spending more time with the sacraments. Upon his death, devotion sprung up around him, especially promoted by the English Benedictines in France. A formal cause for canonisation was opened into him by the Archbishop of Paris in 1734, and he was granted the title
A formal cause for canonisation was opened into him by the Archbishop of Paris in 1734, and he was granted the title "Servant of God". The cause stalled as, after the French Revolution, his grave was desecrated, and his body lost, and the English Benedictine and Jacobite exile communities that promoted devotion to him were murdered. He remains a Servant of God, and I pray that his cause will be furthered. It is for that reason that I made this edit, to bring awareness to the fact he has a cause, and hope to inspire more devotion to him. If devotion increases, then Rome will look into furthering his cause again. A quote, from James' own writings in exile, "It was not thy joys alone, O dearest Lord, that thou didst inspire into Holy King's and prophets of old, but thou revealest to them thy sorrows too". Credit to Bernadette Reilly, a Scottish Catholic icon artist, who created the icon of James shown in the video. #royalism #christianity #monarchy #History #monarch #jacobites #stuart #absolutemonarchy #catholic #britain #royalist #martyr #kingjamesiiofenglandscotlandireland
