THE RESUMPTION MEETING EVERY SCHOOL SHOULD HAVE WITH ITS TEACHERS School Owner, before you start sharing timetables and allocating classrooms... Sit your teachers down. The first staff meeting of a new session should not be: “Here is your timetable. Go and prepare your lesson notes.” Resumption is a reset. It is the opportunity to make sure everyone understands where the school is going and what is expected. So what should you discuss? . 1. THE SCHOOL'S PRIORITIES FOR THE TERM What are the three or four things management wants to improve? Is it: 👉 Academic performance? 👉 Discipline? 👉 Attendance? 👉 Parent communication? 👉 Teaching quality? 👉 Enrollment? 👉 School culture? Teachers cannot help you achieve priorities they don't understand. . 2. WHAT DID WE LEARN FROM LAST TERM? This conversation is important. What went well? What didn't? Where did we struggle? What complaints did parents raise? What problems kept repeating? Don't turn this into a blame session. Use it as a learning session. . 3. EXPECTATIONS FOR TEACHERS Be clear. Discuss: 👉 Punctuality. 👉 Lesson preparation. 👉 Classroom management. 👉 Assessment and marking. 👉 Record keeping. 👉 Professional conduct. 👉 Communication with parents. 👉 Staff meetings and duties. 👉 Use of school resources. Clear expectations reduce unnecessary arguments later. . 4. CHANGES FOR THE NEW TERM If there are new policies, procedures, timetables, reporting systems or responsibilities... Tell the teachers before the term gets busy. Don't wait until a teacher makes a mistake and then say: “Didn't you know the new rule?” How would they know? . 5. TEACHER SUPPORT This part is often forgotten. Ask: “What do you need from management to do your job better this term?” Maybe they need: - Teaching resources. - Training. - Better communication. - Classroom support. - Clarification of responsibilities. - Help with difficult learners. A meeting should not only be about what management wants from teachers. It should also ask: “What do teachers need from us?” . 6. ACADEMIC TARGETS Don't just say: “We want better results.” Be specific. Which subjects need improvement? Which classes need intervention? Which learners need additional support? What will teachers do differently this term? . And importantly... How will we know whether we are improving? . 7. SCHOOL CULTURE Talk about the kind of school you want to create. How should teachers speak to learners? How should staff speak to one another? How should parents be treated? What kind of behaviour will management not tolerate? Culture doesn't happen by accident. It is reinforced through conversations, systems and leadership behaviour. . 8. END WITH UNITY, NOT FEAR This is important. Don't let the first meeting of the term become a catalogue of threats. “Anyone who does this will be punished.” “Anyone who comes late will be…” “Anyone who…” Yes, standards matter. But teachers should also leave the meeting thinking: “We know where we're going.” “We know what is expected.” “We know what support is available.” “We are part of this.” . A new term is not just the reopening of classrooms. It is a reset. And the teachers are the people who will turn the school's plans into daily experiences for learners. . So before you welcome the students... Sit down with the people who will teach them. Talk. Listen. Clarify. Plan. Set expectations. Agree on priorities. And start the term as one team. Because a school that begins a new term with clarity has already taken its first step towards a better term. ©mr nsubugapoulmwanguwanga #resumptionmeeting #schoolleaders #schoolmanagement 0777701182
