Everyone assumes a full gold mouth costs way more than porcelain, but the math doesn’t actually back that up. Dental gold is 14-22k, not pure gold, so it’s cheaper per gram than people assume, and a full set of 28 teeth at around 3 grams each only comes out to roughly 84 grams total. At current gold prices that’s about $6,500-7,000 in raw material, and once you add labor and casting you’re looking at somewhere around $12,000-18,000 for the whole mouth. Porcelain, on the other hand, runs $800-3,000 per tooth, and that’s mostly labor and lab fees, not material cost, so a full set of 28 teeth lands anywhere from $22,000 to $84,000. Gold can actually come in cheaper than a full porcelain case, which isn’t the flex most people expect.
