I understand her pov but it's not her responsibility to fix her great uncle in-law's behaviour. Both her husband and MIL are the ones to step up. They're leaving her to do the dirty work and deal with the backlash.

Staffs fault. It’s dessert set out where guests had access. It’s stupid to blame the uncle.

That is not the fault of the uncle. The cake should not have been out.

He should’ve apologized, but I also think it wedding manager and venue screwed up by putting it out.

usually dessert isn't even served until after the cake cutting so if dessert was being served then I can easily see guests thinking it's dessert and meant to be eaten.

I'd invoice the company that was in charge of paying attention to the cheesecake and making sure it wasn't disturbed until the cutting of the cake". Yes uncle is TAH but the company dropped the ball

Uncle sucks, but her anger should be aimed at the venue staff for not keeping the cheesecake in the back in a cooler until the moment of the cake cutting to prevent spoilage and others from eating it. On a side note, how big are these cheesecakes that they can charge up to $400???

YTA if you send an invoice. Shit happens, it should’ve been kept out back until just before the cutting and guarded prior to the cutting.

Late 50s/early 60s is still aware enough to know better. I might’ve given a pass to someone past the age of 80 but no NTA

Proper wedding etiquette never touch the wedding cake or the dessert desserts until the newlyweds have the cake cutting ceremony!! not only did he take the cake he ruined a detrimental part of a wedding. The cake is its own ceremony.!!! they will never get that back

I don't want ro comment, but..... The uncle saw the engraved, and probably decorated, utensils, the cheesecake would have been decorated as a wedding cake. He absolutely did this on purpose. The attention wasn't on him as he is used to, so why not spoil someone else's??? Just my opinion.

It's a bit petty, but not being an asshole. And the husband uncle has done something much worse. Even if he didn't know it was the cake waiting go be cut by the bride and groom, who goes into a complete new cake (especially at a wedding) and start cutting in without asking a question first? Has he no social awareness?

The cake was put where guests could get it. How were they supposed to know it was “the” wedding cake?

it would make you the asshole too. the cheesecake should have been safeguarded prior to the cake cutting so this didnt happen. failing to do so gave the greedy great uncle the opportunity to pig in. it ends up being one of those unfortunate things that can happen.
