💗October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and this time I'm fighting for me.  I've never shyed away from sharing the good with the bad, so here goes...🥹 The last two months have been a daze of doctors appointments, mammograms, ultrasounds, MRI, genetics, biopsy and then a month ago, a breast cancer diagnosis. I knew it was coming...but the shock still hits you when you hear the C word out loud and that it has come for you.  The two weeks leading up to diagnosis were actually harder than the diagnosis itself -- as much as you try to stay positive, you can't help but let your mind wander to all the 'what if' scenarios...and Google can take you down a dark rabbit hole - do not recommend!  Thankfully my cancer is caught early, and I'll likely have a surgery or two and treatment following that and I will be fine. I feel it in my core, I will be fine. I know the next few months won't be a walk in the park, far from it, but I'll get through.  In sharing my diagnosis with my close friends and family, I realized most of them didn't know their breast density, and had never gone for a mammogram -- even though we're now able to have an annual screening mammogram after age 40 here in Canada. Early detection is EVERYTHING. It quite literally can save your life. I want my friends, family and anyone who sees this to advocate for their health: ask about your breast density (as it's much harder to detect cancer on a mammogram for people with dense breasts like myself). Know your risk, and push for an ultrasound and more testing if something doesn't feel right.    As strange as it sounds, I'm grateful for my epilepsy, as it has prepped me for this battle. I remember when I was first diagnosed with epilepsy, reading Lisa Ray's Yellow Diaries blog, as she went through her cancer journey REALLY helped me on my darkest days as I was navigating my new normal, all the pills and many side effects. Even though we were going through two very different struggles at the time, the humour, vulnerability and raw emotion she shared gave me strength.  I hope I can pay it forward with The Booby Trap diairies -- pages from my journal as I go through this battle -- with hope and humour.
