Why a Powerful Flashlight Can Make a Camera Go Completely White During a chase, a driver reportedly pointed an extremely powerful flashlight directly at a police vehicle, causing the dashcam image to suddenly turn almost completely white. The reason is surprisingly simple: camera sensors have a limited dynamic range. When an intense beam enters the lens, the sensor can receive far more light than it can accurately record. The pixels become saturated, causing details in the brightest areas to disappear and the image to appear completely white. This is known as overexposure. What may look like a camera being “blinded” is actually the sensor being overwhelmed by excessive incoming light. Powerful searchlights are used for applications such as search and rescue, maritime operations, industrial work, and long-distance illumination. When a concentrated beam is directed at a camera from close range, however, the intensity can temporarily overwhelm the sensor. The same intense light can also be uncomfortable or potentially harmful to human eyes. So the camera isn’t necessarily broken. It simply received more light than it could process.
