@theamericanbreakdown: When I had boys. Because suddenly, I started paying attention to what was happening to them. 1. Boys are falling behind girls in school. 2. Women now significantly outnumber men in college. 3. Boys grow up with very few male teachers or role models in the classroom. 4. Men account for the overwhelming majority of suicides. 5. And somewhere along the way, we became very comfortable talking about toxic masculinity — but uncomfortable talking about what boys actually need. And that’s where I changed. I still believe women should have every opportunity. I still believe my generation benefited enormously from women who fought for equality. But equality was never supposed to mean ignoring boys. I’m raising two of them. And I want them to grow up knowing that being strong, protective, ambitious, and masculine can be good things. We can raise strong daughters without raising broken sons. However while we are made to look at the failings of society when it comes to women and we are asked to support positive change for them, men are not given the same time, patience and compassion.

I will never forget my school putting on a field trip exclusively for girls so my mom worked with our GATE teacher to do one for boys and they put up a poster for it in the lunch room. One day I watched about three teachers tear down the poster. That’s when I knew there was something amiss with feminism and I was in 5th grade.
