the most vulnerable post I’ve made 😅👇🏼 On our last mountain in Ecuador, I bailed. We spent the last 15 days acclimatizing, climbing, and preping for Chimborazo at 20,500 ft on the last day of the trip. Honestly I had been really impressed by how my body was doing at altitude. We had just climbed Antisana at 18,875 ft two days before, and it was the hardest physical day of my life. We had a quick turnaround for this because of weather, and I knew from the moment we started hiking to high camp that my body was tired. We woke up at 11 pm. The approach to the glacier was rough. The kind of scree where you take one step up and slide all the way back. I was exhausted. We made it to the glacier and our guides said it was some of the worst conditions they had ever seen. The glacier is receding, making for extremely difficult and tiring travel. Our groups slowly started turning back, and eventually Kelby, our guide and I were the only ones still going up. We made it to 19,000 feet and every step felt like the hardest thing I had ever done. My body was fully shutting down on me and I had never felt so depleted. Kelby knew I was hurting and kept checking in on me and eventually I decided I had to stop. I wasn’t sure I could even make it down let alone keep going up. It was absolutely heartbreaking. To turn around only 1,500 feet from the summit after dreaming of climbing this mountain for the last year. I was so grateful Kelby was happy to turn around and just wanted to make sure I was okay, but I also felt so guilty that he couldn’t go on. We really took turns suffering on this trip and it was so special to watch each of us pull our shit together when the other needed it. Kelby’s simple words in this video meant SO much to me. We’ve said it before, and we’ll continue to say it: the goal of these big adventures is to make it back home, even when it feels like it’s the summit. I couldn’t be more grateful for amazing guides and a wonderful group who greeted us back at camp with big hugs. I will remember the beauty, the group, how my husband supported me and how incredible it was to even hit my high point. 🫶 #Hiking #campinglife #hikemore
