You can but its very hard. Sometimes the spouses family can deny the claim as they are required to participate in this process. Unless you have pictures, witness etc., and a court order may be needed instead (to register the lobola). The best thing to do is to register that lobola letter at home affairs while your spouse is still alive. Preferably, immediately after lobola... Another important point, signing that B163 form is extremely important. It shouldn't be done my other family members etc., otherwise it proves that your wife/husband didn't reside with you. And finally ensure that your spouse does not make regular payments (including cash transactions that can be proven eg. via sms or whatsapp) or medical aid statements or even child support you dont know of to children outside your marriage. All of the above mentioned are proof of support and if there isn't a will in place (even if there isn't pension fund and life covers are normally exempt from wills and have separate laws governing them), may result in the other person being able to build a claim against your spouses estate... very important to fix these ASAP. People often think its other women who go after such but its also random family members!
