japan won't even apologize for what it did to China, the Phillipines, Korea. they ignore it/gloss over it in their textbooks

I'm not surprised that she's racist but it also makes it easy not to care or celebrate or have any feeling about her to be honest.

Yes yes completely agree! It’s interesting watching how different people “take in” history. Like people get so shocked when old people have the MOST certifiably insane beliefs and values. People must be held accountable to their beliefs, words, actions — end of. AND also, I think people tend to over-apply our modern, contemporary lens on history, which make us miss some of the absolute darkness of human society — and keeps us from learning from those mistakes/patterns. As modern people, we think the way we do because we’ve been educated, been given diverse contexts and factual information. Lived experience within a culture & time is different. Hindsight is 20/20. And it’s more interesting for us to reckon with the dark, disgusting parts of history and take things in context rather than just flatten to “this is bad” “this deserves to be punished”. Like obviously. People growing up in the early-mid 1900s were crazy and lived in crazy times

This guy went around asking the Japanese who bombed Pearl Harbor…. Most of them said China. Not only has Japan hasn’t apologized for most of their atrocities they don’t teach their people about it as well so there’s another level of plausible deniability

I went to one of her exhibits a while ago, at that time I didn’t know about her racism but all the rules and constrictions she placed on the visitors was very off putting. And I’m extremely experienced with art exhibits

Her racism was rooted from her writings in the 70-80s after she moved back to Japan for her mental health .. I believe she was very unwell then ... she lived a long life but I also think she suffered ... I was taught not to argue with "mentally unwell" people ... you can't always teach them new things because their biases are literally wired into their brains... people can be aware of their biases and still not change due to culture and sometimes trauma .. it's sad that she said and thought some of the things she did ... she did still create a big impact on women in art spaces and also she holds a torch for many people.. many artists that we can still live long lives filled with purpose and intention . Many creatives die before their time due to mental illness or substance abuse ... the fact that she lived to be 97 is pretty impressive still and just the choices she made in general ... she's a teacher if you pay attention ✌

Imperialistic, genocidal Japan was doing all evil before racist Germany ever existed. We know their deeds in the region without comparing them to anyone else. May also the Ainu get reparations and restoration soon.
